License¶
Data license¶
Five of the six CNeuroMod subjects (sub-01, sub-02, sub-03, sub-05 and sub-06)
have chosen to openly share their data. This data is distributed under a
CC0 license — it is
dedicated to the public domain and may be reused, including for commercial purposes,
without asking permission.
Data from sub-04 is not openly licensed. It remains available to researchers, but
only through a signed inter-institutional Data Transfer Agreement (DTA) — see
Access for the request process.
Copyrighted stimuli used in some experimental paradigms (e.g. movies, video games, audiobooks) are an exception to CC0: the data recorded from participants remains CC0, but the third-party stimulus material itself remains under its original copyright. See the README of each dataset for stimulus-specific details.
The floc dataset’s face/place/object localizer images are tracked from the
VPNL/fLoc stimulus set, which does not itself carry a
license. Their reuse terms are therefore currently unclear; an issue has been opened
upstream to clarify licensing, and this page will be updated once that is resolved.
Third-party assets used under fair use or other licenses¶
The documentation site itself also carries a small number of third-party assets that are not CNeuroMod data and are not covered by the CC0 grant above. Each is used under its own license or a fair-use rationale, tracked individually below.
As more third-party assets are added to the site, they should be listed here with their source, author and license details.
Dataset gallery artwork¶

friends.jpg¶
Depicts: Seven pairs of hands holding up pink foil balloon letters spelling “FRIENDS” against a light blue background, used as the gallery tile for the
friendsdataset (fMRI viewing of the Friends TV series). Replaces the earlier legacy tile (an unlicensed Friends season 1 DVD cover scan carried over from the old cneuromod.ca gallery).Author: rawpixel.com, via Magnific.com (Freepik Company, S.L.U.).
Source: Magnific.com, “hands showing friends balloons word”, retrieved 2026-09-03. Original 7752×3072 JPG; downscaled to 600×238 for the gallery tile.
License: Magnific/Freepik “Free for commercial use WITH ATTRIBUTION” license (license certificate on file). Permits web use and derivative works; requires attribution “designed by rawpixel.com - Magnific.com”, credited below.
petit-prince.png¶
Depicts: A boy sitting atop a cratered moon among stars, an illustration evoking the Little Prince without reproducing any book artwork, used as the gallery tile for the
petit-princedataset (fMRI listening to the audiobook of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s Le Petit Prince).Author: Freepik, via Magnific.com (Freepik Company, S.L.U.).
Source: Magnific.com, “nice background of boy sitting on the moon”, retrieved 2026-09-03. Original 2000×2000 transparent PNG; the “designed by freepik.com” watermark baked into the artwork was cropped off, then the image was trimmed to content and downscaled to 552×600 for the gallery tile.
License: Magnific/Freepik “Free for commercial use WITH ATTRIBUTION” license (license certificate on file). Permits web use and derivative works; requires attribution “designed by Freepik - Magnific.com”, credited below.
Note: this replaces an earlier candidate, a Wikimedia Commons photo of a physical copy of the book labelled CC BY-SA 4.0 as the photographer’s “own work”. That license covers only the photograph, not the commercial book cover/illustration depicted in it — a Wikipedia licensing oversight — so it was pulled.
emotion-videos.jpg¶
Depicts: A grid of colourful cartoon emoticon faces spanning a range of moods (happy, sad, angry, surprised, in love, etc.), illustrating the emotion categories targeted by the
emotion-videosdataset’s stimulus set.Author: pch.vector, via Magnific.com (Freepik Company, S.L.U.).
Source: Magnific.com, “Emoticons with different mood and emotions set”, retrieved 2026-09-03. Downscaled 8000×4800 → 600×360 for the gallery tile.
License: Magnific/Freepik “Free for commercial use WITH ATTRIBUTION” license (license certificate on file). Permits web use and derivative works; requires attribution “designed by pch.vector - Magnific.com”, credited below.
Note: this replaces an earlier candidate (a Cowen & Keltner 2017 PNAS figure, Fig. 2, which turned out to be standard-copyright — freely readable but not openly licensed — and additionally embedded third-party photos not licensed to this project).

Depicts: A pixel-art red amanita-muscaria mushroom (a
Super Mario-style power-up icon), used as the gallery tile for themariogame-play dataset.Author: Vecteezy contributor (stock asset “Red mushroom fungi amanita muscaria pixel bit retro game”).
Source: Vecteezy, “Red mushroom fungi amanita muscaria pixel bit retro game”, downloaded under the Vecteezy Free License (license certificate on file,
Vecteezy-License-Information.pdf), retrieved 2026-09-03. Original 1920×1920 JPG; trimmed to content and downscaled to 600×600 for the gallery tile. The white background was subsequently keyed out to transparent (flood-fill from the image border on near-white pixels, with the anti-aliased fringe alpha-blended) and the file re-saved as PNG on 2026-09-03, so the tile reads cleanly against both light and dark doc themes.License: Vecteezy Free License.
